How to collect mailing list data successfully

When trying to grow your mailing list you should consider capturing as many relevant details as possible for example:

  • Name – To personalise marketing messages
  • Email Address
  • Secondary email address – For example a work email
  • Products or Services they are Interested in – To target your campaigns so they are relevant to what you have to offer
  • How often they would like to be contacted – So you meet their contact expectations and not bombard them, or worse that they forget they signed up to your mailing list.
  • When they are likely to purchase from you – Annual, Quarterly or Monthly purchases are common with most people. Contacting your email list at the right time is important.
  • Personal brand preferences – People love brands and also dislike some, ensure you provide them with information related to the brands they trust.
  • Contact Telephone number – This can be used to contact them if they click through to your website start to purchase, but do not complete the transaction. Ring and ask if they need assistance.
  • The more information you gather about your site visitors the more you can tailor your correspondence to meet their needs.  You may need to offer some form of onsite incentive to encourage people to sign up, “Sign up for our Best Deals!”  Or “Our best deals are sent to our mailing list first”.  Don’t make all the above bullet points required details, make them optional as people can sometimes feel additional information is intrusive to their privacy.
